The Infinite Extent is Book 6 in Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse series, and it drops Bob Johansson — the sarcastic, self-replicating AI at the center of the whole saga — into a to-do list that would break a lesser digital consciousness: track down whoever built a wormhole network spanning known space, figure out what's inside a derelict alien ship nobody wants to touch, crack faster-than-light travel, relocate tens of thousands of refugees, and deal with an old enemy that's back and angrier than ever. Oh, and maybe save the universe while he's at it.
Ray Porter returns to narrate, which is close to non-negotiable for this series at this point — his voice has basically become the sound of Bob in most listeners' heads. This review covers what's going on in the story, where it sits in the series, what to expect from the narration, and who's going to want this one at the top of their queue.
Now available: The Infinite Extent released on September 10, 2026, as an Audible Original, narrated by Ray Porter. Runtime is roughly 8 hours 22 minutes. We're listening to the full audiobook now — check back soon for our complete narration breakdown and score.
If you've followed the Bobiverse this far, you know the drill: Bob Johansson died in the 2010s, got resurrected as an AI, and spent the next several books cloning himself into a swarm of self-aware space probes — the "Bobs" — each with their own personality, priorities, and running commentary on the absurdity of it all. By Book 6, that swarm is managing an interstellar civilization's worth of problems at once.
The Infinite Extent picks up with the Bobs facing their most tangled set of crises yet. A wormhole network built by persons unknown raises the obvious question of who has that kind of engineering power — and whether they're friendly. A derelict alien spacecraft sits there daring someone to investigate it. Refugees need somewhere to go, which means someone needs to find them a planet, fast. And an old threat that the Bobs thought they'd dealt with resurfaces, forcing them to split their attention between diplomacy, exploration, and outright survival.
It's a lot of plates spinning, which is very on-brand for a series that's always balanced hard sci-fi problem-solving with Bob's running joke that saving the universe is, frankly, exhausting.
The Infinite Extent is Book 6 of the Bobiverse series, following Not Till We Are Lost. This is not a jumping-on point — the series has built up years of continuity across the Bobs, their individual arcs, and the wider universe they've been shaping, and Book 6 assumes you're caught up. If you're new to the series, start with We Are Legion (We Are Bob) and work forward; trying to start here would mean missing most of the emotional and political weight the story is carrying.

The Bobiverse audiobooks are one of those rare cases where the narrator is arguably as big a draw as the author. Ray Porter has voiced Bob (and every clone of Bob) since Book 1, and at this point his delivery is inseparable from the character — the dry sarcasm, the deadpan reactions to universe-ending stakes, the way he makes a swarm of near-identical AI clones each sound like distinct people despite sharing the same base personality.
With Book 6 juggling several Bob clones across different crises simultaneously, that skill matters more than ever. We're currently listening to the full production and will follow up with specifics on pacing and how well the multi-Bob threads stay distinct in audio form.
This one's for you if you're into:
If you haven't read the earlier books, this isn't where to start — and if hard sci-fi with a lot of technical problem-solving isn't your thing, the Bobiverse in general might not click for you regardless of how good this entry is.
For this series specifically, audiobook is the format most longtime fans default to, and Ray Porter's performance is a big reason why. If you've been reading the earlier books instead of listening, this is a good point to consider switching — his interpretation of Bob has become something of a fan-favorite element of the series in its own right.

On paper, The Infinite Extent is exactly the kind of ambitious, plate-spinning entry that's kept the Bobiverse fun six books in — a wormhole mystery, an alien derelict, an FTL breakthrough, a refugee crisis, and a returning enemy, all in roughly eight hours of listening. That's a lot to pack in, and how well it all lands will come down to pacing as much as plot. We're listening to the full audiobook now and will update this review with a complete narration score and verdict shortly.
